Scallop Shell Gyotaku Print A5Scallop shells have been used so much in art and design they really are very pleasing. They are particularly tied to the Island of Anglesey as they have their own biscuit here. The Aberffraw biscuit is made by pressing biscuit dough into the shell to give it a distinctive shell shape. They make a lovely motif for Welsh Art. Printing requires pushing the paper into the grooves and it's difficult to achieve a great print. This print is A5 and is on

and the simplicity of the composition all contribute to a piece that is both modern and timeless

A simple glue which I make myself if applied to the reverse of the print and a sheet of Masa paper is pressed on to it and left to dry

The print is on Chinese calligraphy paper and has been mounted using the authentic Japanese wet mounting technique which uses a simple flour and water paste and requires a period of around 24 hours to dry and stretch

I felt the final panel needed something more

the artwork has a soft iridescence that shifts beautifully in the light
